We are a satellite group of the Empty Gate Zen Center in Berkeley, California.  Our guiding teacher is Jeff Kitzes (Zen Master Bon Soeng).

On Thursday evenings, our practice at Amaru Wellness includes:

• Chanting of the Heart Sutra
• Chanting the Great Dharani
• Two periods of sitting meditation, with walking meditation in between
• Tea and discussion of Zen practice

The Human Route

Coming empty-handed, going empty-handed -- that is human.
When you are born, where do you come from?
When you die, where do you go?
Life is like a floating cloud which appears.
Death is like a floating cloud which disappears.
The floating cloud itself originally does not exist.
Life and death, coming and going, are also like that.
But there is one thing which always remains clear.
It is pure and clear, not depending on life and death.
Then what is the one pure and clear thing?

 

Marshall White, M.Div.

Marshall White is the team interfaith chaplain for a major hospice in the San Francisco Bay area.  He received his Master of Divinity degree from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, and is a Dharma Teacher in the Kwan Um School of Zen.  Raised in the Baptist and Episcopal churches, and deeply immersed in the Buddhist and Christian meditation/contemplative traditions, Marshall is committed to interfaith communion and spiritual dialogue.  Marshall is also a high-ranking practitioner and teacher of the martial art of Aikido.

 

Susana is a licensed practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and functional endocrinologist with a light touch and deep impact. Her interest in medicine began over a decade ago when she worked as an assistant to an OB/GYN while pursuing a medical degree. She has worked at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital and Premier Oncology treating post-op surgical pain, gastrointestinal disorders, spinal injuries and nerve pain.
Susana treats chronic internal medical conditions and musculoskeletal pain in her private practice at Amaru Wellness Center in San Francisco, CA.
